What is IRUS?

IRUS (Institutional Repository Usage Statistics) is a standards-based statistics service that enables participating institutions to share and compare information about usage of items in their institutional and research data repositories.

How IRUS works

IRUS collects raw usage data from IRs and processes into COUNTER-conformant usage statistics. This provides repositories with comparable, authoritative, standards-based usage data.

We make the statistics openly available through our website. Participating organisations also have access via the API and widget.

For a more detailed outline see the Service description.

Why IRUS?

  • Facilitates comparable, standards-based measurements
  • Provides an evidence base for repositories to develop policies and initiatives to help support their objectives
  • Offers consistent and comprehensive statistics, presenting opportunities for benchmarking
  • Provides opportunities to demonstrate the value and impact of institutional repositories
  • Supports an active user community, ensuring that the service is responsive to emerging user requirements
  • Independent of software provider enabling benchmarking across platforms

Where did IRUS start?

If you would like to read about the original development of IRUS then details are available 'PIRUS2 project' within the 'About' area of the IRUS-UK legacy (R4) service website.
